Hay Fever Prevention

The best way to prevent symptoms of hay fever is to avoid allergens.

For Seasonal Hay Fever

Avoid

There are certain allergens you should avoid if you experience seasonal hay fever. These include:

  • outdoor activities during high pollen seasons (trees in the spring, grasses in the summer, ragweed in early fall)
  • mowing the lawn or raking leaves
  • open fields or construction sites
  • hanging laundry outside
  • peak exposure time to allergens (usually the early morning)

Do

Some preventive measures you can take for seasonal hay fever include:

  • Wear a dust mask when outdoors.
  • Keep the windows closed and use the air conditioner in your car.
  • Close windows and doors to your home; use the air conditioner during pollen season.
  • Keep your indoor environment as allergen-free as possible; use air filters, disinfectants, bleach, etc.
  • Consider moving to a different area with fewer or none of your allergens.
  • If you have any allergy medications, take them exactly as your doctor prescribes.

For Perennial (Year-Round) Hay Fever

Year-round allergies may be triggered by plant-based allergens and pollen as well as mold, dust, pet dander, and cockroaches in the home.

Avoid

There are certain allergens you should avoid if you experience perennial hay fever. These include:

  • pets, if you have a known issue with dander
  • allowing pets in the bedroom
  • carpets and pieces of upholstered furniture, especially in your bedroom
  • stuffed animals or other stuffed toys

Do

Some preventive measures you can take for perennial hay fever include:

  • Keep your home dry and cool.
  • Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter.
  • Ensure that your house is free from dust mites and mold spores. (The Asthma and Allergy Foundation provides tips on how to do this.)
  • Wash dishes and empty garbage daily.
  • Store all food in sealed containers.
  • Get all pipes and faucets checked for leaks.
  • Wash bedding every week with hot water.
  • Use allergen-proof covers on your bed and pillows.
  • Bathe pets regularly — weekly if possible.
