Psoriasis Alternative Treatments

Successful treatment of psoriasis doesn’t rely on medications alone. Many psoriasis alternative treatments involve daily choices to control inflammation triggers.


Unfortunately, there is no cure-all diet for psoriasis. What works for some people may not work for others. The key to determining if certain foods trigger your inflammation is to slowly eliminate foods from your diet to see what improves.

Nutritional tips to ease psoriasis include:

  • Cut down or eliminate red meats, processed foods, and foods high in fat.
  • Avoiding nightshade vegetables (including potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers) may help control inflammation related to psoriasis.
  • Eat a diet rich in fish, turkey, fiber, celery, lemons, and lettuce. These foods help cleanse the kidneys and liver.
  • Incorporate soy, nuts, chocolate, and cranberries, which are listed as "functional foods" by the National Psoriasis Foundation.
  • Drink plenty of water.

A food allergy cleanse, which can be done in as quickly as three weeks, is one way to determine what foods trigger inflammation and outbreaks. This type of cleanse is meant to help you determine how your body reacts to allergens.

Nutritional Supplements

Along with a balanced diet, certain nutritional supplements have been successful in helping ease psoriasis symptoms, including:

  • fish oil
  • vitamin A, specific to the skin
  • vitamin E
  • vitamin D
  • milk thistle
  • evening primrose oil
  • lecithin
  • selenium
  • zinc
  • folic acid

Skin Treatments

Many psoriasis alternative treatments are aimed at addressing the redness and flaking of the skin.

Applying oils—such as olive oil or vegetable oil—can help loosen plaques of dry skin and help seal moisture into your skin.

While water can dry your skin, taking lukewarm baths with Epsom salt, mineral oil, milk, German chamomile, or olive oil can help ease symptoms. Also, hard water contains minerals that benefit the skin, while soft water contains sodium that dries your skin.
