Psoriasis Complications

Many of the complications surrounding psoriasis stem from the appearance of the lesions and scales. The lesions and sores can also be itchy, which can lead to bleeding and skin infection. Psoriatic arthritis can lead to severe inflammation, which can limit physical mobility because of the pain.

Psoriasis has a larger impact on quality of life in women and children.  Psoriasis can cause low self-image, anxiety over social situations, and limitations in certain activities, such as swimming. It has even been linked to depression and suicide.

Psoriasis has also been linked to a higher risk of heart-related conditions, such as heart attack or atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.

In the case of erythrodermic psoriasis, severe illness can result as the body’s chemical balance is thrown off from the disease, including:

  • infection
  • pneumonia
  • congestive heart failure
